The Laguna Madre Gator Chasers triathlon club, PowerWatt Coaching, LLC and the Town of Laguna Vista are hosting the fifth annual “Du It By The Bay” duathlon on Sunday, Jan. 30 at Roloff Park in Laguna Vista.

The duathlon’s adult course will consist of a two mile run, 10 mile bike ride and another two mile run that event organizers say is simple enough for beginners, yet challenging for experienced duathletes.

Participants can enter as individuals or as a two person or three person relay team.

The event will have a youth duathlon that children ages seven to 16 can compete in. The youth duathlon will consist of a half mile run and four mile bike ride followed by another half mile run.

On race day, registration and packet pickup will start at 6:30 a.m. followed by the transition’s opening at 7 a.m.

The transition will close at 7:45 a.m. and the athlete meeting will begin at that time.

The adult individual race and relay will begin at 8 a.m. The youth division starts at 10:30 a.m.

Each year, proceeds from the duathlon are given to AMIkids Rio Grande Valley, which is a nonprofit residential facility in Los Fresnos that helps kids with a troubled past have a bright future.

Du It By The Bay is currently in search of volunteers to help with tasks, such as packet pickup organization, setting up and handing out water to runners, monitoring courses and picking up materials after the race.

The Du It By The Bay duathlon is part of a multisport race series scheduled for 2022.

According to race director Dr. Karen Watt, there are at least 115 people signed up for January’s duathlon so far.

Additional events in the race series will be held between March and September in Los Fresnos, Harlingen and on South Padre Island.

All of the races are sanctioned by USA Triathlon, which is the national governing body for triathlon and other multisport events.

Watt said one of the reasons people greatly enjoy the Du It By The Bay triathlon is because it’s a distance that beginners can still manage to cover.

“We have everybody from beginners to really experienced athletes in different age groups so it’s always very fun and we have shirts, medals, awards and usually raffles,” Watt added. “It brings people together to enjoy the first event of the season.”

Watt said she feels thankful for the City of Laguna Vista to allow this event because they do a great job with providing police and fire department help with traffic control.

“We really appreciate them,” Watt said. “It’s a really nice little community and they keep all of the runners and bikers safe so we appreciate it.”
