Whether you’re a speedy runner or a casual walker, there’s an upcoming event that is a perfect mix of exercise, food, live entertainment and most importantly, tons of fun.
The South Padre Island Muzicians Run is scheduled for Saturday at the Beach Park at Isla Blanca waterpark, located at 33261 State Park Rd 100.
An expo, packet pick-up and same day registration will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The expo features fitness apparel from vendors and sponsors and will be held under La Palapa at the waterpark.
Participants will receive a mariachi designed T-shirt. The T-shirt is available in sizes extra-small to 4XL, however, there may be limited sizes for those that register the day of the event.
Announcements and the national anthem will take place at 4:30 p.m.
The fun run/walk will take place on a sidewalk and asphalt course that starts and ends at Beach Park at Isla Blanca. The 10K is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. The 5K will start at 5:05 p.m.
Along the route, there will be live entertainment. In total, there will be six groups performing. Five of the six are mariachi groups.
Participants are welcome to wear running apparel or themed costumes, such as mariachi outfits, folklorico dresses, luchador outfits or anything else that’s music related.
There will be at least two water refill stations along the route. In an effort to reduce waste and littering, water stations won’t have paper cups. Participants are asked by event organizers to bring a cup or water bottle.
The route will be open for an hour and 45 minutes. For those that feel they might need more than 45 minutes to complete their race, event organizers recommend bringing a light, such as a head lamp.
The music-fueled fun run/walk won’t be timed, however, the top three to cross the 5K and 10K finish line will win premium SPI Muzicians Run swag, prizes and bragging rights.
At the end of the run, participants will be greeted with more music and will be able to select either a beer, margarita or non-alcoholic drink, as well as receive a taco and a five inch finishers medal.
The event’s After Race Party and Mariachi After Party begins around 5:30 and 5:45 p.m. Family and friends of participants are welcome to attend the expo and after party for free.
This is the South Padre Island Muzicians Run’s third year. It’s being held by event producer Angie Juarez, who owns 26point2 Events and Consulting.
In 2018, during the event’s first year, it had more than 350 participants. The following year reached more than 650 participants. Due to the pandemic, the event wasn’t held in 2020.
“We’re so excited to be able to come back to this event,” Juarez said. “Coming into this, the first big goal was to pass our first year mark so we’re happy to see that our community, both locally and regionally in Texas, are coming to South Padre Island to participate in this event.”
Juarez said she was inspired to create the event because she felt that the Rio Grande Valley was missing a fun run/walk like this one.
“To me, what people enjoy about this event are the reasons that I actually started to run the event for myself,” Juarez said.
She began running with the Leukemia Lymphoma Society in 2013.
“I’ve run events from San Francisco to Washington D.C. and one of the biggest things that I saw along the routes participating in these big national events was a lot of entertainment and great finisher medals,” Juarez said. “I put together all of the different fun things that I experienced throughout different runs across the country and that’s what we’re trying to create down here in the Valley and on South Padre Island while bringing together our South Texas culture.”
The on-site registration price of the 5K and 10K run will be $60.
Any profits made from the event will benefit the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center and Alligator Sanctuary and the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 1544.
