Waves of anglers of all ages and skill levels will be exploring the Gulf Coast this weekend showcasing their skills and techniques while searching for the best catches.

The annual Shallow Sport Owners Tournament is entering its 20th year this summer.

The tournament kicks off with registration on Friday, Aug. 13 at the South Padre Island Convention Centre, located at 7355 Padre Blvd.

Event organizers say there are some fun new additions to the tournament this year.

The tournament is adding more chances to win trophies by introducing “open bait” and “artificial only” classifications within its guided and amateur divisions.

Also new for this summer’s tournament is the addition of SCB Boats, which organizers say are welcome in either division.

Team pickup for completed pre-registered teams will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Pre-registered teams, new registrations and registration changes can be made from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The adult angler fee is $130 and includes a Shallow Sport Tournament performance shirt, cooler bag filled with goodies, a 20th Tournament Kolder Holder Koozie, a door prize ticket, boat raffle ticket and a wristband for food on both nights of the event.

The child angler fee is $85 and includes a Shallow Sport Tournament performance shirt, cooler bag filled with goodies, a 20th Tournament Kolder Holder Koozie, a door prize ticket and a wristband for food on both nights of the event.

A social participant fee costs $85 and includes the same items as the child anglers.

The tournament’s registration party will be held from 5 to 9 p.m.

There will be merchandise and raffle sales, food, music, door prizes and boat pool and team registrations. Scholarship recipients will be honored during the registration party.

A mandatory captain’s meeting will be held at 7 p.m.

The tournament continues the following day at Louie’s Backyard with check-in from 5:30 to 6 a.m.

Teams must check in by boat. There will be a cannon take off at 6:30 a.m.

This year’s tournament will have a new scavenger hunt. According to organizers, brightly marked buoys will be placed throughout the fishing area. Competitors are advised to look for buoys while fishing to win special prizes during weigh-in.

Weigh-in will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Organizers describe the on-stage weigh-in as being exciting, new and interactive with MC DJ Wernecke. During weigh-in, participants will also be able to turn in their buoys for the tournament’s scavenger hunt.

All boats must be on the dock and in line by 3 p.m.

After a long day spent on the water, the tournament will wrap up with an awards banquet filled with music, food and a chance to win more than $35,000 worth of prizes.

The banquet will be held at the South Padre Island Convention Centre. Doors open at 6 p.m. Dinner will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.

The awards portion of the banquet begins at 6:30 p.m. More than 30 metal art trophies will be awarded and someone will win a 2021 Shallow Sport 24’ Mod V that organizers say is worth more than $95,000.
