Whether residents and visitors of the Laguna Madre area are looking to spend a scenic day outdoors or want to contribute to a good local cause, this may be just what they’re looking for.

The Port Isabel Rotary Club is gearing up for its first Hackers and Slackers Golf Tournament fundraiser.

The tournament will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the South Padre Island Golf Club and Resort, which is located at 1 Golf House Rd. in Laguna Vista.

“It’s going to be a fun tournament,” event chairman and Port Isabel Rotary Club President Don Lackey said. “There’s going to be lots of fun ways to score, play and have a good time.”

Registration will start at 7:30 a.m. and there will be a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

Jose Guzman, a former pitcher of the Texas Rangers and current Texas Rangers Spanish radio analyst, will be the guest host of the event.

Registration fees are $125 for individuals. Registration fees for a team sponsor of four costs $500. Additional sponsorships are available.

The registration includes  — all fees, carts, practice range balls, breakfast tacos, lunch and contests, such as the hole-in-one.

Goody bags for participants will include items, such as a dry-fit shirt, a rotary cap, sleeve of Titleist golf balls, package of tees and sunscreen.

Lackey said the Rotary Club is fundraising for community projects, scholarship funds for high school students and its first responders program.

“We’re also going to be putting in some benches at the bus stops and at the food pantries,” he added.

Lackey said in prior years, the Rotary Club used to have a shrimp and fish fry fundraiser.

“We wanted to do something else,” he said. “I’m a golf professional and have been in the golf business for about 30 years, so I came up with the idea of doing a golf tournament to raise money for the education funds that we do for the kids, community projects we have and good things the rotary club does not only for the community, but in the state and around the world.”
